From its national origins during the Civil War era to the growth of local lodges throughout Virginia, the Knights of Pythias has remained rooted in fellowship and service. Fredericksburg Lodge No. 22 stands as part of that living history—continuing traditions that span more than a century while adapting to the needs of the present day.

Following its congressional charter in 1864, the Knights of Pythias expanded rapidly throughout the United States. Lodges became centers of fellowship, social support, and organized charity, assisting members and their families long before public social services were widely available.

Virginia emerged as a key region in the Order’s expansion, particularly due to its proximity to Washington, D.C. Early lodges formed in Northern Virginia and steadily spread across the Commonwealth. By the early twentieth century, Virginia was home to dozens of active lodges, each serving its local community while remaining connected to the broader Pythian mission.

Fredericksburg Lodge No. 22 represents a continuation of this legacy at the local level. Through decades of fellowship, charitable giving, and civic involvement, the lodge has adapted to changing times while remaining faithful to the founding principles of the Order.

          A Living Tradition

The history of the Knights of Pythias is not confined to the past. It is a living tradition carried forward by members who believe in service, fellowship, and community responsibility. Fredericksburg Lodge No. 22 honors this heritage not simply by preserving it, but by actively living it.
